The reserves headed up to Sunderland RCA for the 1st round of the cup buoyed by our recent victory against our hosts. White, Donnison and Roberts had the home team all at sea, but we just couldn’t ripple the net. The first half saw both side create chances, which on another day would have yielded goals, but not today.
H.T. 0-0
After loading up on sweets at half time we started strongly in the second 45 and just ten minutes into the half the ever dangerous Donnison created a chance, but as the ball flashed across the six yard box no one could finish. Just a moment later a carbon copy fell to Roberts at the back stick who kindly allowed White to tap in for his first of the season. Nothing more than we deserved.
Unfortunately an immediate lapse of concentration gave our hosts a penalty, which Patto couldn’t keep out, on this occasion. As the game wore on both sides threatened, but it was Wolvo who had 3 great chances, but all went begging. Sunderland’s front line were kept at bay by some excellent defending from Henry, Hatfield and Hakes, amongst others.
Into the last few minutes the coaching team made a string of changes with penalties in mind.
F.T.1-1
Penalties it was…
Most of the team put their hands up to take one and the lottery began. Ultimately Sunderland came up against Patto - who saved one, and forced another one to hit the bar as Wolviston banged in the first four- winning 4-2, with one to spare.
Could we see an all Wolviston second round?
